Running 91 or 89 gas runs $2.15 for 91 in San Jose. If it goes over $2.25 I run 89.

run mostly 87...no problems...ran 93 on a trip to Bristol,TN the other weekend...no noticeable difference in power or fuel economy....I do not think it is worth the difference in price

Not to introduce a controversial element to this discussion, but I was wondering if anyone else has ever heard the following; Years ago it seems like I read somewhere that gasoline sold in many metropolitan areas was "formulated" (maybe thats not the correct term) to have cleaner emissions than gasoline sold in the rest of the country. As I recall the cleaner emissions came at the expense of power and/or fuel economy. I don't remember where I heard this. It may have just been something a co-worker told me. But I do remember that I was living in Dallas, Tx at the time and I made 6-8 trips from there to my home state of Ala. I would fill up in Dallas to start my trip and usually fuel up again somewhere around Monroe, La. From Dallas to Monroe I would always avg 21 mpg, from Monroe to Ala. I would avg 23 mpg. Virtually all of the miles were on the interstate traveling at 70-75. My entire return trip to Dallas I would avg 23 mpg. The only difference I could ever figure out was the gas I bought in Dallas....Anyone ever heard of this before? What could be different about the gas, is it just more refined?

let me throw this in here....I cannot confirm if this is actual but.....I have contact with lot's of truck drivers in my business...tanker drivers included...more than one has said that when they have picked up a tanker load of gas at the refinery that all trucks are in one line getting gas out of the same bulk tanks...if you are picking up a load of some of the major brands then you are given a one gallon container of some type of additive to dump into your tanker before loading the gas.....one gallon per a tanker load of gas, how much difference could this make....I feel 87 octane is 87 octane no matter the brand, I have never seen any difference between using a major brand vs a gas such as WalMart or Costco.

For the record, I buy 90% of my fuel at Sams Club, and I've never had a problem with it either..but my parents have had vehicles that didnt like cheaper brands ie. "Citco" type gas...it made my moms car ping and knock.

I always run 87. I've never had a newer vehicle that would knock while running 87, and since it is more volatile I think you would even have more power with lower octane. Why run a high octane if your truck doesn't need it? Is it better for the enviornment or something? &n bsp;
Also, a few months ago I saw that there was going to be a story on the news comparing brands of gas against one another. Has anyone seen that? Any differences?

(October 1998) Just when the free (to plunder) marketeers thought it was safe to buy gas or breathe the air, we see reported where gas stations are arrested for installing "smart" computer chips in their "smart" fuel pumps which record accurate pricing for $5.00 and $10.00 worth of gas, coincidentally the same quantities at which "Weights and Measures" officials test gas pump accuracy. The "smart" gas pump gimmick chips permitted gas station owners to gouge consumers up to 25% more than the price which was reflected on the pump dollar value gauge for amounts of purchase other than $5.00 and $10.00....... be absolutely sure that you are not paying more than the posted dollar per gallon price by only pumping $5.00 or $10.00 of gasoline at a time. Pump in $5.00 or $10.00 increments to make absolutely sure you are not being scammed for fill-ups...... If you suspect that a gas pump is inaccurate call your local City of County Weights and Measures official and report the situation.
I watched a story about the issue above on 20/20 or some similar show a few years ago...I was shocked at just how many cases of this was uncovered in the investigation. I don't remember the exact figures and it doesn't really matter cuz I'm sure it can vary widely by location, but it was much higher than the <1% that I would have guessed.
I am sure I have been a victim of this scam before...was so sure in fact that I even mentioned to the station owner. I had owned my truck for a couple of years and it's gas guage was very consistant..I was pretty low on fuel so I expected it to take 15 gallons to fill up (it had a 16 gallon tank) The pump claimed it supplied almost 18 gallons of fuel before it cut off......
