On page 9-3 on the manual it states: "Use unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 91)." Anyone know if that means 87 Octane or 91 Octane? I've always used at least a 91 octane in mine.

The octane rating reflects the combusability of gasoline. Lower octane gasoline has a lower ignition temperature. When you run an engine with high compression the gas has a tendancy to ignite before the piston is all the way up on the compression stroke (pre-detonation). This, in effect, causes force to be applied counter to the correct engine rotation. Thus putting a tremendous amount of stress on the main and rod bearings and causing a knocking noise.
The Titan does not have a high compression engine and therefore should operate just fine on 87 octane. Contrary to popular beleif, higher octane does not improve performance or gas mileage. If you are experiencing a knock (pre-detonation), increase the level of octane. If the knock goes away, that is the level you should run.
To maintain performance levels, you are much better off using a fuel system cleaner that can be found at your local auto parts store. I find that adding a good fuel system cleaner to a tank of gas once every 3000 miles (every oil change) helps to keep my intake and injectors clean and my mileage doesn't suffer.
