new poster...I recently bought an '05 Titan, love it so far..
HUGE upgrade from my 2002 Saturn SL1 in every sense of the word.
I have never owned a 4x4 before, and the manual says you shouldn't use
the 4x4 mode on DRY pavement...says its ok for snow, mud, ect....but
what about WET pavement?
I assume you CAN use it on wet pavement, since, well, it's not dry, and
that's theonly restriction placed on the 4x4 mode (other than speed of
course).
I just want verification before I break sumthin'.

Wow!! man did you do a 180! from a Saturn to a full size 4x4...lol I am not a 4x4 guru, but I found this article informative, maybe it will help you as well.

Thanks for the link... it doesn't say it explicitly, but I getthe
feeling I should NEVER engage the 4WD on pavement, unless it is icy,
snowy, or muddy...
It says never on DRY smooth pavement, but doesn't mention WET smooth
pavement as an exclusion...on the other hand, it isn't listed as an
INCLUSION on when to use the 4WD...
*whew*
methinks I'll just keep it in 2WD until I hear otherwise

I drew the same conclusions ...sounds to me like you only use 4WD if 2WD isnt getting the job done.

I have used 4wheel in the wet with no issues on my suburban so I don't
see why the Titan would be different...oh wait this is my 04 Titan. It
may be OK in an 05. Ask the service manager at your Nissan dealer,that
way if somehting breaks you can say-you said it was OK. Now pay my bill

Don't see why you'd need it on just wet pavement other than to burn up that pesky gas in your tank faster.

My thought exactly. It's like using a .44 mag when all you need is a pellet gun.

Not saying I would necessarily USE the 4 wheel drive on wet pavement,
but there are possible scenarios where I would think it might come in
handy, and I'd rather not break my new truck so I was asking to see if
there was any insight from fellow truck owners because the
owner's manual is unclear....

I just returned from a poker game - close to four inches of snow on the roads, plus ice. As you know, 4X4 isn't going to help anyone on the ice. Taking it slow and keeping it straight is the only way to go. I left it in 2WD on the way home tonight -- and just took it slow all the way home. I did shift to 4X4 in the neighborhood (about a mile's worth), as the plows haven't even been through yet, it's a little hilly, and I probably didn't even need 4 wheels in motion full time as I kept it rolling under 10 MPH. Since it is new, I also though it might not be a bad idea to circ the fluid in the front diff., so I took the opportunity to do so. Back in 2WD, up the driveway, home safe and sound.
I have had 4X4's most of my life - I use it sparingly. It's nice to have when needed, like pulling the camper out of the mud, on the beach, etc. I put 130,000 miles on a 4X4 Durango and think I only had it in 4X4 four times the whole four years I had it --- and a lot of that was in the hills, in the snow, hunting, camping, etc. Again, nice to have -- if needed. I've driven through hurricanes (about a foot of rain a minute!!!!) through the Carolinas -- and never saw a need for 4X4 -- and the pavement doesn't get much wetter than that.
What possible scenarios are you thinking about?

Well... just as an example...
Tonight it is a mixture of rain and snow with freezing
temperatures. There are portions of the roads (e.g.
bridges/overpasses) that ice over quickly, as well as portions of the
road that may ice over or collect snow. However, much of the
roadway is wet from the rain/snow mix and is not iced over.
I was wondering if it did damage, so that in a situation like this, I
might have every advantage available to me by having the vehicle in
4x4, and not having to switch on the fly repeatedly. Some of the
road is wet, some snow, and some ice. I don't want to use 4x4 on
the wet pavement if it is going to do damage.
It is a pretty simple quesion really... not trying to get into a debate of who uses their 4x4 more/less and all that jazz.
Another example you say? What if I am having fun tooling around
off-road in 4x4, though you may not feel the need or are perhaps just a
better driver, and decide to take a short hop on a paved road to my
next destination, just after a rain... do I HAVE to take it out of 4x4,
or will it damage my truck?
See? Simple question... am I damaging my truck by running it in
4x4 on wet pavement. Its not that I am gunning to have it in 4x4
full time, just wanted to know if I *could* engage it on wet pavement
without damaging my truck.
