I've been driving 4x4's for 26 years now and from my experience driving in 4WD on wet or dry pavement is no more dangerous to the drive train than smooking up the rear tires. If your driving straight ahead there isn't any issues at all. the only time it is of concern is when you make a hard turn. the outside weel has to move faster to get around the corner, there fore the inside wheel has to slip. On snow or ice or mud the slipping isn't as noticeable. so it's like anything else, if you abuse it you will lose it. but I'd rather risk losing an axle shaft or tearing up a tire than losing control of my vehicle and killing someone.
Just my thoughts, not an expert or anything.
