I have been using premium (93) but this got me to thinking that I may not need it, its just become habit for me after years of owning VW's.  Anyhow what are you using?

I am just using regular unleaded....that's what I was told when I bought my truck and it seems to be working just fine (and I am not paying as much $$$ for premium as well)

The user's manual says 85 or better, but it refers to it as a knock index rather than MON, RON, or average.

My owner's manual states that 85+ is recommended. I have been
alternating between 91 and 87 to see if I can notice much of a
difference. I think the truck has slightly more power using 91, and
does get better mileage. I think the mileage increase pretty much
pays for the added cost of the Premium fuel...so I'm going to keep
using it. I'm currently at 12,100 miles by the way.

I use fuel with an octane rating of 89. The sales brochure states that premium fuel is required, but my salesman told me that was a typo. The owner's manual says that fuel with an octane rating of 85 will suffice. So, really, anything over, say, 87, is a waste of money. I'd get away from using high octane fuel (91 or higher), though. Once in awhile to burn carbon form the valves is OK, but over the long run, you will do more harm than good.

This is very strange since my manual reads an AKI of 87.  Which is what you find on gas pumps.

Not so.  I ran my first two tanks thru with 87 octane.  Sure the motor ran fine but I did notice a slight knock on intial throttle tip in.  Just like Maximas do when you run 87 in them.  I'm a Nissan junky, and I own a 285WHP Turbocharged Sentra just to give you an idea that I'm not talking out my ass.   After running 93 octane I can definitely say the knock is gone and the motor revs smoother.  My guess here is that Nissan created the ECU program so that it would run okay on 87 octane so that the domestic guys couldn't say that their trucks run on 87 and use it as a downside to the Titan.

You can do that just by letting the truck redline 2nd gear! :)

> but over the long run, you will do more harm than good.

Only harm you are doing is to your wallet.

The book states 87 or mid grade, if I remember correctly.  If you live in a high altitude area like Colorado (which is where I live), you can go with the standard grade (85 octane).

Since I am still in my break in period (1100 miles as of this posting), I am sticking with mid grade (87 octane) until after the break in.

Side Note:  We have a 2004 Maxima SE and the book states "Premium Unleaded Preferred", but we run mid grade in that.

Bottom line....if gas wasn't on the rise and was so expensive right now, I would run Premium all the time in both.

This is what I found in the manual regarding octane and High Altitudes (Look at the Octane Rating Tips section):

I'm gonna try a tank of 85 and see how my truck drives....

I also read something recently that those octane ratings are kind of BS.  When they say "minimum 85", that means at the lowest, but most likely it is higher by a point or 2...i.e. 86 or 87.  Same goes for the higher grades.

I think what I specifically read was to not buy Premium cause you were just throwing your money away over mid-grade.
