Well at $3 per gallon, I'd just cuss and pay it. I would prolly make some minor changes in my driving habits...ie. fewer trips home to Ala. At $4 per gallon I would prolly have to limit my trips home to once every 2 months instead of every weekend like I do now (a round trip is apprx 300 miles).
But as far as trading for a fuel efficient ride, I think we, along with millions of other Americans, would be in a no win situation. If gas were to rise quickly to $4+ per gallon, NO ONE would give you jack sh_t for your gas guzzler as a trade-in. It wouldn't surprise me to be $4K-5K upside down on my truck loan under those circumstances...I for one could not afford to "give" my truck to a dealership and still have to come up with $5K out of my pocket for pay off....not to mention that if gas were that much, all the econo cars would be selling at a premium....double whammy!!!
At $4 a gallon, I think most would find some pretty creative ways to reduce the number of miles they drive each day, whether it was car-pooling, eattin lunch at their desk everyday, vacationing closer to home, or completely eliminating all unnecessary trips altogether. (wont the tree-huggers just love that?! ..lol) Will some trade in their SUVs and trucks for Jettas and Civics? Of course they will..I predict millions of them will. That is what will create the scenario I described above. If one believes that gas is headed that high and you are unwilling or unable to afford it, I guess the smart thing to do would be to go ahead and trade now....Will I do it?...prolly not..lol...keep on truckin
