Here's the first draft of the headlight replacement procedure.  If anyone uses this and finds any errors, please let me know and I will correct it.

Enjoy.

Thanks Max!!  Great info.  Interestingly, my SE KC 4x2 had only 3 of the clip positions across the bottom of the grill vs the 4 that yours had.  I guess a configuration difference between models or a production upgrade.  Mine also had thick washer under the top mounting bolt lug of each headlight, looked like they helped align the headlight housing with the fender.

Anyway, got the bulbs changed and can't wait for dark so I can try out the new Xenon XD5 lights!

Thanks,

Dale

Very detailed write up.  Where did you get your bulbs from??

Know anything about adjusting the headlight beam??

I got my bulbs from Susquehanna Motorsports (http://catalog.com/susq/hella/bulbs.htm)

I've since then replaced my high beam with a clear 100W that I got from a group buy on my Audi forum from Supreme Power Parts for $25 shipped for the pair (http://www.supremepowerparts.com/).

Low beam is a 9006 and high beam is a 9005.

In the lower photo on page 3 of the writeup, there is a black screw below the red arrow.  This screw adjusts the vertical height of the beam.  Don't remember which direction adjusts which way, but it should be obvious when you start turning it.  You might want to drive up to a flat wall so you can better see which way it moves.  Just be careful how far up you adjust the beam so you don't blind oncoming drivers.

It's true that HID headlights use xenon bulbs, but it's not the same as the replacement bulbs that companies call xenon which are used to replace standard halogen bulbs.

The HID systems have a high voltage ballast and the bulbs produce light by creating an arc in a xenon filled bulb, and start at about $125 each.  The "cheap" xenon bulbs  have a filmament like the halogens, but are filled with xenon gas rather than a halogen gas.

I believe it is illegal to retrofit a car with HID lamps if it is not an option from the factory.
