Has anyone noticed your throttle surges just a bit going down hill while using the cruise control? It's not huge or dangerous, but definitely annoying.

Anyone else, or is it just me?

I think I know what youre talking about...but  I think what its doin, is down shifting to keep the speed in check...I've been told that if the driving conditions are that hilly you prolly dont want to have the cruise on, cuz over time it will wear out the cruise control..????...keep on truckin

I have had the gear selection issue as well, kind of unnerving at times. Can we really wear out the cruise control??

I run the CC a lot but I have also learned to do it with manual shift as well at times.

AZ to CO has a LOT of up and down stuff. If you hit the hill at 70 (I was going slow as I was towing...) in 5th and let it do its thing, the trans is all over th place between 3rd and 4th as it struggles.

Tip: see the hill in the near distance? Tap it to 4th, as you assend the hill and it drops down to 3rd, pull it back and leave it in 3rd. Crest of hill; pop back to 4th and finally to 5th.

I find I'm roaring it at about 4200 in 3rd to hold a steady 70-72mph. If this damages the trans ts, that's what I bought this truck for. I don't beat the crap out of it but I do expect it to work hard.

Good idea on the down shift. I generally forget to put it in 5th beacsue of the odd placement of it. Its just my quark. I am not really worried about blowing out the tranny as much as the rearend. My neighbor who is a master tech for Toyota says the the rearend issue is alo present on the Sequoia and The Land Crusier. They bottom have issues with the rearend after towing. The spider gears in the diffs are getting crushed. We may want someone to see if Nissan will explain to them what took place when they get theirs replaced......SORRY I"M WAY OFF TOPIC

Todd TCE,

Yes, I noticed the transmission hunting a lot going into the hills... I was doing what you explained and was manually making the shifts. WHat kinda freaked me is if I popped it into 4th and then it automatically went to 3rd the thing screams... and with my Banks exhaust it is like a crack of thunder when it kicked to 3rd!

I wonder if the surging I'm feeling going downhill with the cruise control is the trans hunting and not actually the throttle?

Opinions?

I have experienced that surging too. In my opinion, it is NOT the trans hunting. It totally felt like throttle surges. When I felt that, I just turned off the cruise control.

Well if youre goin down the road at 60 mph, and you manually downshift into 4th gear..isnt the RPMs gonna increase....just like if you get into the throttle? Its also gonna slow you down (I was always told if your brakes fail down shift to reduce your speed) ...I dont know about anyone elses truck, but I think the surging that I have felt goin down hill with the cruise on was simply that...the truck changing gears to keep the speed where I set it.
