I was wondering if there are any oil filters out there besides nissan and what people are using?  Also, I know the recommended first oil change, but what is the best?

TIA,
Ron

Nissan & Toyota filters are rated very highly for flow and use good filter media. The anti drain back valves are pretty consistant also. You can't go wrong with the Nissan OE filter and it gives the stealer one less thing to gig you on in case something goes wrong with the motor during warranty. Mobil 1, NAPA Gold,K&N's are also pretty good off the shelf alternatives.

As far as changes go - the factory fill is just 5w30 bulk dino oil, nothing special but not bad.

Running the factory fill out to 3700 is OK. I believe new engines can be quite "dirty" inside due to all sorts of left over crud from manufacturing. I initially changed my oil at 400,1600 and 3500 mi using good 5W30 dino to flush it out. At 3500 I changed to 0W30 synthetic for the winter. Sadly, my Titan is kind of a RV so it sits for days/weeks without use. Mostly, I tow my snowmobile trailer and start ups during the winter are sometimes -15F where I go. I want something that pumps FAST. In the summer I'll go back to 5W30.

Just stick with what the manufacturer says. You're wasting $$ and oil by changing it too frequently. I haven't reached the first change yet but after that it will be what the book says. Every 3K is a waste of my time and $$.

If a new engine such as the one in the Titan is that dirty I wouldn't trust it at all.

Oil and filter are cheap insurance.  I always have and always will follow the 3 month/3K mile rule.

I always get a filter and crush ring from the Nissan dealer as well.

Currently running a Fram toughguard by default. No K&N in stock.

Anti-drain back valve?
You should crawl under your truck some time. Oil doesn't flow up hill very well.

Thanks for the reply's, I have had great success with Purolator Pure One oil filters and not much luck with Fram oil filters.  I will be changing my own oil with reciepts to document my oil change with Mobil One 5W30 and a Purolator Pure One oil filter.  I am also topping off my low gear oil as well.

Thanks again,

Ron

I thought it was kinda funny...I got a "30 min oil change" ad from my dealer that stated for $x.xx they would change my oil, including adding up to 5 qts of oil. The manual states an oil change for the Titan should require 5 1/2 qts....I wonder if I'm supposed to top it off when I get home???....lol

Anyone use Amsoil synthetic 5w-30 and their oil filter?  According to Amsoil you don't have to change the oil for 25K miles or one year which ever occurs first. But you need to change the oil fliter every 12,500 miles, BUT you must be using an Amsoil filter.  Other filters you must change at OEM time intervals. Amsoil is about $6/qt, filter is about $10.  According to "their" tests, Amsoil just beats Mobil1 in all but one test.

I use whatever they put on at the oil change place. I don't think it's that technical of an auto part unless you use your truck for heavy duty purposes or extreme offroad. For day to day ordinary driving, there isn't anything real special for oil filters or oil. My opinion.
