Your discussion of dings caught my attention. I was actually banned from a motel in Athen, GA because I had the gall to say something to an old fellow after he rocked my new 1977 Mercury Cougar with his door while I was sitting in the car. I have now developed a specialty which involves finding the most ding proof parking spot in the parking lot. It is not always the one that is farthest out. I try to think like the most lazy POS in the world and figure where they would park. Then avoid. Give Camaros and Firebirds pleanty of room. They are the most deadly dingers.  The side of the building or parking lot is most ignored. My wife has now accepted the ritual of the "drive-thru" of the parking lot for those I have not visited before in order to gain a familiarity.

And if I am there when it happens - all guns blazing. 911, the police, the works. The bastards will pay.

All of us that park WAY out to avoid dings invariabily end up with a car parked on either side of us and we cringe as we approach our trucks/cars waiting for that ding.  So-----get way out and park crossways across three or four spaces.  Far enough out that you won't inconvience anyone.  I notice vehicles parked way out and take it for what it is, someone not wanting to get dinged and I respect their space.  Unless it's some REALLY expensive car then I park beside them, between them and the store so the owner can cringe some as HE/SHE approaches.  But, I park far enough away from them so they can't ding me or me ding them.  Great fun, really

I do the same drive-by to scope out a good spot, i always get crap from my wife that she has to walk to far. Yet, my other whoopdee (2002 Explorer) is still flawless mind her! I will have guns drawn so to speak if i witness the crime in action!

I've tried parking by light poles to protect at least onside of the truck, and at stores that are less busy, I park close to the handicapped spot. Seems to work so far.
