Hello-

When I purchased my Titan from the dealer I had to sign a document that indicated that the dealer explained to me that I should NOT use snow chains on my 2-wheel drive Titan. The dealer really didn’t know why I shouldn’t use chains, only that the Nissan said I shouldn’t. Anyone else have to sign something like this, and does anyone know what the issue with snow chains on a Titan would be?

Thanks

Hmmmm interesting...Didn't know that you shouldnt use chains on any vehicle.. NEed to lurk here and see what the experts have to say about that.

I dont recall signing anything like that, and they certainly didnt point it out to me. But prolly not much of an issue here in MS. I would like to hear why tho...

If you have the 18 inch tires, there is not enough room for the chains and the tire in the wheel wheel (unless you've raised your truck)-  look in your owner's manual.

RC what page refers to the 18 inchers? I looked and all it said was to get the low profile ones.

I agree the clearance may be an issue. Lots of plastic to get torn up if those chains start to bow or get loose.

Another issue may be the ABLS,VDC,ABS,Brake Assist systems getting all confused. All that stuff is calibrated for certain conditions or situations, chains may throw that out of whack. Make the truck do unexpected and ugly things.

The low profile chains according to the manual are a size "S" if I remember correctly. (Page 8-35 of the 2004 Manaul)  All I know is that regular chains, 18 inch tires, and no clearance in the rear wheel well don't go together.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you read between the lines  Nissan really doesn't want you to use them. The chains that I used on my Tahoe are too big to use on my Titan without doing some damage. Plus I noticed during our snow/ice storm over Christmas, that the slush builds up very quickly and will cause a lot of tire rub on all 4 wheel wells. Needless to say, I kicked off a lot of buildup every time I stopped somewhere.

Hello-

I did get to the bottom of this... Because of the ABLS,VDC,ABS,Brake Assist systems, and because of the limited clearance with 18 inch tires, you do need to use type "S" chains. These are actually not chains; they are really heavy-duty "Z-Cable" type chains. They are low profile so they don't rub, and they are low enough to the tire that they don't mess up the ABLS,VDC,ABS,Brake Assist systems. The form that I had to sign was specific to not use real "chains".

I got a set at BigO-Tires, $109. I used them over the holidays up at Lake Tahoe and they worked great. We had 3 – 4 feet of new snow, and my 2-wheel drive, with chains worked great. There were many, many, small 4-wheel drive SUVs stranded all over the place and the Titan never had any problems.

dasray,

Thanks for the lead, will search Big-O for them. Do you have a part#? Drove on ice on the way home the other morning and it was pretty hairy, with all the torque these things have right off the line makes it interesting and can be a handfull!

I dont think they make a size to fit the 265x70R18 but this might work for some others
