Hello everyone,  I am new to the forum and was looking into getting rid of my Duramax since diesel fuel prices are so high and getting a Titan.  I came across a screaming deal on a 4x2, but I need a 4x4.  What would it take to make it a 4x4 besides the obvious (front diff, cv axles...)  My biggest concerns have to do with the computer, transfer case, and tranny changes.  I know I should just find a 4x4 but this is an incredible deal, so good I think I still would be a ton of money ahead after a 4x4 conversion.  But I want to do some research first.  Also, have you guys seen very many donor trucks out there for 4x4 parts?

Unless the dealer is giving away this truck for free, I see absolutely no way that you can convert a 4X2 into a 4X4 and still come out ahead.

The biggest and most expensive component you will need to make the conversion is a transfer case. I'm sure that's at least $1,000.

Since the Titan is a new truck, finding parts for it will be difficult unless you happen to find one at a salvage yard. Good luck there.

Also, how much can you do? If you can perform all of the work yourself or with a buddy, then obviously you will save a few dollars, but I doubt anywhere near enough to offset the prices of the parts.

If you look hard enough, I'm sure you can find an excellent deal on an '04 Titan 4X4 that some dealer is looking to sell to make way for the '05s.

I was expecting to spend about 5000-7000 in parts, and most of the labor I can do myself.  The truck I am looking at has 15000 miles, leather, etc. and is a little over $12000. so I know I can come out on top. plus getting to take on a project like that would be fun!  Only thing I worry about is why the truck is that cheap, so I am checking into everything I can about it to make sure its not a lemon!

Wow! I know it's a 4X2, but $12,000!

I'd wonder, too, why a truck that's one year old with just 15,000 miles is selling for such a low price. I take it that it's being sold by a private seller.

Well, since you have the VIN, go to Carfax and get a vehicle history report. It will cost you about $25 to get unlimited reports for a month on this vehicle and any other, but it's worth it if you're seriously considering this truck.

Good luck.

By the way, I've seen diesel prices in western PA as low as $1.99/gallon.

Diesel by me is about 2.50-2.60/gal and the closest pump to me was 2.78/gal today.  Yeah, I know on that price!  I am still in a bit of shock and find it too good to be true, but its worth checking into.  Yeah, carfax report will come as soon as I find out if its feisable to make it a 4x4.

One other thing, are all titans with 4x4 electronic transfer cases? sounds wierd, but the computer stuff is my biggest concern.  All the mechanical stuff isn't really a big deal, but if the computer is suppose to see/control/monitor all these things and it decides not to play nice...  no fun.

Call me a Doubting Thomas if you will, but if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Go to Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com) and find out how much a Titan LE 4X2 with 15,000 miles is worth.

Actually, Kelley Blue Book does not give prices on used Titans.

Try www.edmunds.com.

Other possible options? If you find this vehicle has a clean history, buy it, sell it for a profit and apply towards a 4x4?? Or, buy it and part it out - given these are new, you'd probably make even more with minimal work, of course potential buyers are limited too  , but the vehicle history won't matter. [I assume you have the time given that you'd consider a conversion. . .]  Its an option I'm considering instead of a trade-in of a Ford (at least there's lots of potential customers) . . .

I was just thinking about the aspect of buying it and reselling it and using the profit toward a 4x4.  Thats actually the most reasonable thing to do really!
