i dont know if i read this here or some other nissan titan forum. now you know how our trucks come with 5-speed auto transmission. is it true that 5th (D) is really our over-drive. that supposely to get better fuel efficiency to drive in the streets on (4) and once you get on the highway to switch  to (D) is this total bull or really a fact?

The  dealer  I bought  mine  from  said  you  will  get the  best mileage  by leaving  it  in  D.   But,  I am  taking  his  word for  it.   Just read the  owners  manual, it must give a recommendation.

I would  think that you can't go wrong by putting it on the D because it won't shift into that gear unless it needs to, which will probably only happen on the highway anyway.

I would think you would want to leave it in D all the time esp. for fuel efficiency, unless of course you are towing and need the torque.

Technically 4th and 5th are overdrives as 4th is a better than 1:1 ratio. I don't have it handy but I beleive the owners manual tells you what all the gear ratios are. 5th, being the tallest gear is going to give you best mileage. I drive up a lot of hills on my way home so I use cruise control and 4th gear to limit the number of shifts and wear on the transmission.

Around town, I don't think you will get any better mileage by leaving it in 4th.  You will however save some wear on the trans as mav suggested as it won't shift into and out of 5th everytime you start to coast or get over 45 mph.  The only down side is one you do start driving on the hwy most likely you will forget to change into "D" because the engine does not sound like it is racing in 4th, so it is easy to overlook.
