I have the tow package and as I understand it...we have 3.36 gearing (can anybody confirm this?).

I'm wondering about regearing to get better towing capabilities and a happier diff...any thoughts.

Anybody do this yet?

I thought it was more like 3.09 still very freeway friendly. Some of us got stuck with 2.87s or there abouts.

When I bought my Titan The window sticker said it had two gear ratios included in the tow package. They call it lower final gear ratio. They are 3:36 and 4:10 according to my sticker. Anybody Know anything about this?

I haven't seen anything stating 4.10 or that Nissan engineers had even felt that steep of gear was needed. It seems that Nissan likes to equate the 5 speed auto to a 4 speed. The Big Tow package gives you a:3.357 and without 2.94. Nissan says these are similar to a 4.10 and 3.73 using a 4 speed auto. They ain't I can still smoke tires in my 96 suburb and it has 3.73s and a 4 4L60 aka 4 speed auto. The titan won't even get close to smokin'um unless the wheel is cocked to one side or the other.

I did some promo work on this truck and can't recall the numbers but with the five speed you have a lower geared truck than a lot of other vehicles already.

The rear dif number is only the final drive. How you get there is important. Seeing as the first three gears are spaced with lower output to begin with you don't need a a lower rear gear multiplier. You cannot compare final drive numbers on a four speed to those on a five.

If I recall, the 5 is an overdrive, the 4 is a 1:1 and the lower three are collectively lower than what you'd find on a lot of trucks. I do not recall what the math crossed over to- if it were 4.10 or what. Sorry. A bit more time and numbers and we could run it all over again I'm sure.

With the motor turining more rpm than most other trucks you create a helluva lot of torque with the lower three gearrs IF you crank it up more. The dif is only the final number but does not dictate the only result.

* If you need to improve towing you simply need to run the motor a bit higher. That's where the power is in this one. This truck runs strong in the 4-5k range all day long. (passes everything but the gas station) If you feel like a dog, drop down a gear. I run (yes with cruise on) pulling a modest 2500lb race car trailer at 70-75 up and down hill doing nothing but popping from gear to gear as required.

Hey Todd,

That's great and all, but you should be concerned with the rear diff.  That's where this truck is failing for those who tow.  The 3.36 final is doesn't offer enough reduction for a vehicle that tows.  The by product is heat...and hence the reason for the cooling fins for 05.

The cooling fins are to help a symptom, not fix the rear problem.

4.10's would make the truck slow, poorer gas mileage...but improve towing as far as the rear diff is concerned (specifically heat production)...not to mention making hills THAT much easier to go up.

Since you were involved w/ this truck...do you have access to ring and pinions for it (the 4.1....I'd be willing to be the Ginnie pig).

I only did a few marketing days with guys on the truck, I was in no way associated with the design or parts.

This question of rear gear did come up in dealer training and we covered it with them as customers wanted to know why the truck didn't have a lower rear gear in it- the answer is/was that it's not required. The basis of that being you get the same power to the ground with this as you would a 3.73 maybe- don't recall the parte compared to.

If the rear gears are getting burned up I'll go on a bit of a limb and say it is related to one of two things:

1. Lack of proper oil, oiling
2. Poor gear build quality

Simply turning the gear a a lower speed because of the ratio I cannot see being the root cause. Generally if you were to have too tall a gear you'd just gear down the trans for more torque. That's what they did here and the reason it hauls butt off the line.

I admit I don't tow a really heavy trailer but I run the crap out of it up hills when I do pull and have zero problems with it running 42-4300 in third at 72mph up hill.

And I make no claims to being a production car expert. All of my work on gearboxes is open wheel race cars. And if my customer needs more toque I'd change the gear stack, not the ring and pinion.

* and I'd hate to think what those 4.10s might do for gas mileage! lol

Nissan says it's comparable to 4:10.
