I pull a large camper. The weight is under 9600 pounds. The transmission cooler gauge runs a the top of the gauge the whole time. I took in to the dealer and found no problem. Does anyone else have this problem? I bought the pickup to pull my camper. I get about 6-7 miles per gallon(horrible)pulling my camper. I should have bought a diesel.

I saw some similiar posts on the Titan Talk forum many mos. back- during the summer.

I recall that if you pull a heavy trailer in 5th gear you'll get hot. Pulling in 4th knocks the temp back into the normal range. May has to do with the torque converter and the trans essentially being in overdrive. Also if you use the TOW MODE switch that may help. However I think the T-mode only holds the shifts longer in 1,2 maybe 3.

Your gas mileage may even improve since pulling in 4th may put the engine more into the power band. Hey , doesn't cost to try it.

I took my truck in again for the same problem. I had a bad transmission cooler. They told me you can tow in 5th gear on the highway.

Did a test with my Titan while towing through the mountains.....tried towing uphill with the "tow mode' off. Tranny temp went waaay up but the truck seemed to work better slipping a whole bunch. If I let up on the throttle and it kicked into fourth, tranny locked up pretty quickly and the truck slowed, kicked back down to third, revved, went back to fourth, slipping, temp goes up again, etc, etc, etc. Hit the button, tranny kicked to thrid, locked up and stayed there till the top of the hill. Temp guage didn't move after hittting the button either. Damn thing must work!

The Titan does have a ~9100lbs towing capacity but if you are towing a camper or anything else close to that wt with that big of a wind resistance on the highway for a extended amount of time you are asking for trouble.
