I have read about some of the rear-end problems, but here is a question.

I had my oil changed at Jiffy Lube, and the guy said that my rear diff fluid level was okay, but that the fluid was foamy and had "completely broken down."

I took it to the dealer, who looked at it and said it was fine, and that it was "special fluid" that was supposed to be that way.  He then told me that Jiffy-Lube guy was probably an idiot.

After reading about some of the rear diff problems and the new differential fluid, should I go ahead and change this on my own?

I fear that the dealer is just blowing me off and I don't want any future rear end problems.

What do you think?

I have never heard good things about Jiffy Lube.  They are quick, but thats about it.  When I took my truck in the one and only time, they didn't know how much oil to put in it and they wanted to sell me a new filter with only a few thousand miles on it ...  Don't take your rig there.

As far as the diff ...  I just took mine to the dealer yesterday because i noticed some leakage and they changed out the oil and put a new seal on it.  When it doubt, take it to the dealer - it's warrantied!!

Cheers!

Glad to hear you still had all your oil after going to Jiffy Lube. The last person I know who went there lost their drain plug on the way home.

The question I had was really not about Jiffy Lube, but about whether or not I should just go ahead and change the rear diff oil if the dealer won't do it.

If that will make you feel better then do it.

If you have an 04, you do not have synthetic fluid. If this is the case I would HIGHLY  recommend changing to synthetic. If you have an 05 you have the synthetic, but it should not have any foam in it. Take a look for yourself. If it has foam or does not look right I would be a little more demanding at the service center. After two rearends now I am a little touchy.

Nissan now recommends a Synthetic for the rear differential on all Titans, Armadas, and the Infinity FX56.  The best you can get, in my opinion, is Amsoil Severe Gear Oil 75w/90.  You can get it very reasonable on my site at www.environmentalassociates.biz.  It is good for practically the life of your truck and it's backed by a guarantee from Amsoil.

Isn't the 75w/140 recommended?
