does the oil filter look puny to anyone else or just me..?

 I mean come on.. my Harley's have bigger filters..

it is a small filter.  i'm not sure why it's such a small filter.  i use the fram tough guard and the number is 7313 (i think )

i don't know....oil is so much more refined and treated these days.  maybe a large filter is required because the oil stays cleaner.  i think it's like computers.  the newer they are, the smaller they get.

the dealer told me to use "genuine Nissan Filters" to keep it in warranty...

 because of some check valve in the filter.. it supposably keeps the oil from flowing back..?

but the filter spins on with the threads up.. so the filter will stay full regardless ..right?

Unless they can prove an aftermarket filter was the cause of the problem, I dont think the mfg can legally void the warranty.....also good point about the threads pointing up......My dad was given that same line many years ago by Toyota, so he always bought their filters...since then I have "heard" that all modern filters have a drain back valve....All that being said, since its only a couple of $ difference, I prolly will go ahead and use the Nissan filter as long as it is under warranty, unless Im in a bind and cant get to the dealership...if not, I personally dont think using a Fram filter would hurt anything....

Just about all good filters have "check valves"... and also pressure relief valves so that in case your filter would plug for some reason the engine oil would keep flowing... better unfiltered oil than none!  The dealer just wants you to buy theirs...

I'm going to use an Amsoil filter and 100% synthetic Amsoil on this next change (around 6000 mi). Amsoil filters have better capacity (dirt holding power) and better filtering (down to 10 or 15 microns I believe).

Using Amsoil synthetic oils and filters I was doing 7,000 to 10,000 mile oil changes on my Nissan HardBody SEV6... it has 250+K on it and is still going srtong with little signs of slowing down anytime soon!... although my Titan gets driven much more these days!

If you use the Amsoil bypass oil filtration system that filters down to 1 micron they recommend oil changes every 100,000 miles! Basically synthetics do not wear out like petroleum based oils, it's the dirt that must be dealt with. Syntheti'c are much better at handling temperatures... Why do you think that jet engines run on synthetic's... because petroleum oils cook!

Just FYI Amsoil recommends 7,500 mile oil change intervals using their products. As I have said before in regards to these products, I'm no salesman, just a believer...

I always use a filter from the dealer.  I also pick up a new crush-ring for the drain plug each time while I'm there.

If you go to the dealer you have all the service records. With your service records you will have better resale value.
