Ok, my mother-in-law now owns the 1994 Pontiac Grand Am SE my wife and
I bought brand new back in 1993. Last week she said the steering
wheel started "moving up and down and wouldn't stay in one
place". I stopped by to look at it and the column seems to have
broken somehow, like someone pulled on it really hard. The tilt
now does not work and not only can you move the wheel all the way up
and down, it moves from side to side some as well.
It isn't loose like if you push it up, it falls down by its own weight, but it won't stay in one place anymore either.
My question is, can this possibly make the air bag fire? How
dangerous is it for her to drive the car this way before we can get it
repaired? We will get it repaired as soon as possible, but she
has some doctor appointments that she absolutely cannot miss, and
neither me or my wife can drive her.
Lastly, do you think the regular mechanic we take her car to can fix
something like this, or is this possibly a "dealer only" fix?
Thanks for all your input.
